Is it true the U. S. is a major exporter of oil?

And if so, what sense does that make when there's all this complaining about a dependency on foreign oil?

No, US is one of the top PRODUCERS of oil, but not EXPORTER of oil. We consume what we produce -- and then need to export a good deal on top of that -- being the biggest oil consumer in the world. But we do export certain refined oil products -- that's not the same as exporting crude oil.

Oil production is increasing significantly in the US, however, and we've already in recent years lessened the proportion of oil we import. Some observers are thinking in the future we'll greatly reduce out "dependence" on imports and maybe become an exporter.

No. We do export a bit. It is cheaper to send Alaskan oil to Japan and ship oil from the Middle East to the East Coast than to send the Alaskan oil to the East Coast, but overall, U.S. oil exports are very small: less than 50K barrels a day compared with total production of 9,000K barrels per day and imports of about the same.

It is also the case that some of the oil imported from Mexico and Canada gets refined in the U.S. and the gasoline, diesel fuel, etc. exported back to Mexico and Canada. But again, that's about 2 million barrels day as compared with total refining output of 18 million barrels per day.

Yes. They get the oil from middle east for cheap prices since us oil companies have a branch in saudi and other parts of middle east drilling it and sell them to countries for a higher price.

well, they could if Obama had enough balls to not worry about stupid polar bears and use the oil resources we have in Alaska.

Source(s): I support Obama but no his choices in Alaska.
