Is it my starter? '09 Nissan Ultima?

Occasionaly, when I turn the key to start the engine, the starter will engage but doesnt turn over, sounding like a weak battery. It will do the same thing several times before catching and starting right up. The strong start tells me its not the battery. Could it be my starter going bad? Please include some credentials with your answer. thanks.

Credentials Please! 36 years working on foreign cars Nissan Master Technician. More often than not the brake light switch sticks and brake lights don't turn on and car will not start. You could slip a white card between the rear window and third brake light to better watch the brake light. Brake light switch is not expensive and is easily installed with out tools. Battery terminals clean of corrosion and shiny metal? Battery terminals were not hammered on to push the connections down? And if the starter motor fails most time the car will not start at all. Good Luck

Pretty young car to have a bad starter. I've seen the same thing from a corroded starter or battery cable connection. The first couple of "weak" tries heat up the connection, temporarily making it better for the good start.

By doing as you stated, the starter would be a very good place to start.

Maybe the starter solenoid is bad...
