Why are all clothes made in china?

You go into stores like for example, urban outfitters which is ridiculously overpriced and the clothes all say made in china, so why are they so much?

Or you buy a top which is like $80 and its made in china again.

Why do they charge so much for clothes that are cheap to make there? I know this sounds ridiculous but it makes me happy when I see something that says, made in the usa or Canada or the uk, Australia etccc cause everything has china on it.

Not all of the clothes are made in China, many apparel items are manufactured worldwide. Clothing brand owners look for the cheapest sources of labor and material to maximize their profit margins. Labor and material costs in China are cheap, as with many other locations. Overhead costs associated with labor and manufacturing are minimal in third-world and developing countries (if at all), compared to developed countries.

Actual manufacturing costs: the labor and material, are just a fraction of the retail price... the price you pay is determined by the brand owners and the retailers. Most often it is set at "what the market will bear"; the maximum of what the consumer is willing to pay before seeking a cheaper alternative.

A shirt may actually have a unit cost of $0.75 USD to manufacture. The manufacturer will add their overhead and profit margin to the unit cost... the unit cost of that shirt is now $1.00 USD The import/export agents have fees that are added to the cost for handling and shipping... the unit cost of that shirt is now $1.25 USD. That shirt must be shipped from the port-of-entry to the brand owner's warehouse, the domestic carrier has their cost, overhead and profit... the unit cost of that shirt is now $1.50 USD. Storage in a warehouse has costs... the unit cost of that shirt is now $2.00 USD. The brand owner sells the shirt to a retail purchaser for $15.00 USD per unit. The retailer sells the shirt to the consumer for $45.00 USD... or maybe it will be discounted for a limited time for the holidays... $30.00 USD, or a special limited time offer while supplies last... buy two at the regular price and get one free (3 @ $15/unit = $45 cost... sell 2 @ $45/unit + 1 @ gratis = $90 consumer price... believe me, that retailer is still making a healthy profit even by giving away a "free" shirt).

Consumers cannot blame and be angry at the sources of manufacturing for overpriced/poor quality items. The brand owners are solely responsible for consumer pricing, just as they are responsible for quality control and consumer safety.

All clothes are not made in China, I often see clothes that say made in Vietnam, India, Bangladesh.

But the reason why you see these labels is because the wage costs are cheaper in these countries offset other costs at the moment which made it more profitable for the company.

As for charging prices that the why life is people want to make money and they will rip off other people when they have the chance too, the same happens ANY where in the world, including China.

A lot of clothing is made in other countries, not just in China.

The labour costs are much cheaper in countries where the everyday people don't insist on finding a cushy job that provides an income that permits possessing:

    1) an SUV,

    2) a luxury car,

    3) a five bedroom house with beautiful landscaping,

    4) 3 TVs,

    5) an Entertainment Room,

    6) 14 pairs of shoes,

    7) all the latest techno gadgets,

    8) annual vacations in exotic places,

    9) stock portfolios,

    10) $100 grand for the kids' education,

    etc. etc...

...just to salve their ever-needy egos.

Welcome to the reality of a Capitalistic "Glass Ceiling" placed on your well-decorated fishbowl, as sold to you for decades by the advertising industry. I can see the water inside is rising fast... and people are swimming in their own sh*t as the economic "cleaning pump" is running out of energy and resources.

Morality has been undermined by greed on such a vast basis for so long, I'll guess you'll just have to send your money to the hungry 3rd world by directly purchasing their blood and sweat now to gain some satisfaction in the form of instant gratification. Oh, and don't expect them to be grateful for that... because... when it gets down to fighting for scraps, you represent The Competition and they have more experience in "basic survival"...

Lim Yuan has most of the points. Just to add a bit more. China, India, Vietnam, Mexico etc....these countries intake clothing , shoes etc....manufactures. Because of the following reason:

    1. Lot's of people need work, they create employment there.

    2. Lower labour cost. People are able to work long hours with lower pay, can you? (They need work, no choice)

    3. Mass production, they produce quantity in order to cope with the market demand.

    4. Cheaper production cost, machinenary cost.

    5. Cheaper bulk shipment by the containers.

Entrepreneurs calculated well in advance before decided to have their products being manufacture in these countries.B ig boys ,like Ikea, home depot in China too, you know why, don't you?

    Thanks for asking.

cost of labour and materials are way cheaper in china, but not everyone makes their clothes in china, some companies still prefer to have their stuff made in italy, quality over quantity and deisgner brands are already so expensive so doesn't make much of a difference, i worked in china for several years and i was working as a middle man, its actually amazing to see how cheap they can make clothes, im back in london, but im more than happy to reccommend anyone to my contacts in guangzhou

Ha ha yes well, China is a big industrious country! And we (U.S, U.K etc) don't have as many workers as china does so we have to send some work overseas. Since they have to ship it back, which costs money, the price of the garment is also high.

    Hope that helped!
