How do you guys feel about the Confederate flag?

Im a Latino from Chicago I always thought of the confederate flag as being racist and people who waved it were racist. When I moved to rural Texas and saw many people had that flag in their porches, I felt this weird feeling in my chest as if I had gone back in time to the 60s.

Again I was a kid from Liberal Chicago and in school I was taught that the flag was racist. In Texas though I was introduced to another view on it. People told me that the flag isnt racist at all but its more of a Southern Culture thing as to say "Im proud to be from the South".

What is your feel on it?

A flag is not racist... It is certainly possible that how it is used might be. But it can just as easily be a positive thing. I am originally from Illinois too, but I have lived among southerners for many years. As you have come to realize, the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern pride in their long and rich history... of the unique culture that goes along with being a southerner. Southerners should not be defined by their role in the Civil War. They have brought much more to America than that and the Confederate flag represents those contributions as well.

I am a Northerner. The confederate flag is part of the history of the South. And I agree with them, that if you don't like it, get out.

It has been turned into a symbol of racism by those who do not like it. If you do not like it, then have Congress pass a law, like Germany did after WWII, that bans the display of the flag (in Germany's case, the Nazi flag) If you believe it should be banned, I will not stop you. That is your right as an American Citizen.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of hate. It is NOT a cultural statement in that it does not represent all the children of the South.

Not everyone views it as a race thing. The people who fought for the Confederacy were essentially fighting for their country, because the Union and Confederacy were separate. Some people see the Confederate flag as a good thing.

It was not until I was older that learned that it was a symbol of losing side of the civil war.

I grew up watching The Dukes of Hazard...and a car that was stunt driven was very cool to me.

I think some defend it suggesting that they only display the flag as a symbol of rebel defiance and NOT racism...however there is no way to avoid the fact that it's ties to defiance of civil rights equality is SPECIFICALLY the reason SOME chose to display it.

The Confederate flag is a symbol. In the universal scale, it means nothing, like all other flags.

I think it is a flag of the past and doesn't have much meaning anymore. It is of no importance to me. Texas is not really a part of the old Deep South with the large plantations and slaves.

Its a racist thing. There is nothing to be proud of from the South. The North gave them everything they ever had.

the confederate flag is a symbol of treason and sedition, nothing more and nothing less.

but i do note that most of the people who "proudly" display their traitorous nature also believe that whites are the only "true" humans and everyone else is sub-human; ordained by God to be servile races to the whites.
