Is a Bluetooth 2.1 device compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 software?

I have Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo Thinkpad E530. The Rocketfish 2.1 adapter requires Widcomm software and my Thinkpad requires Lenovo Bluetooth software. Does this sound like a conflict.

I get temporary connections (Sometimes it works well and I can even go into my connected phone through my computer icon) or partial connections (It allows my pc to make phone calls from my phone but will not allow file transfers from my phone to PC).

Has anyone had any experiences with this situation or have any good advice?

Thanks in advance!

The protocols are quite different for 4.0 and 2.1 but you can resolve whatever conflicts you might have, assuming here the purpose is to communicate PC to phone. 4.0 adapters are widely available and are not expensive.

Any research that I have done does not imply conflicts between the operating processes, rather compatibility. The bluetooth.org website has no information nor does the article cited below but gives you an interesting look ( if you are into the technical) into the development o f bluetooth and related technologies.
