Is Atheism a religion? If so should it be kept separate from state as many say other religions should?

There is no actual scientific proof that God does not exist, thus Atheists are actually on the same footing that the various Christian groups they commonly attack like Mormons, Catholics and such, and their claims that God does not exist really amount to a declaration of belief, and thus it is their religion.

So if they are a religion (though not a formally organized one) then shouldn't they be held to the same standards of the Separation of Church and State that many of them are trying to push onto the various religions in America?

Is there anyone who can give me any reason why their religious beliefs should not be held to the same standards that they try to impose onto other religions, or give me a solid explanation for why Atheism should not be considered a religion aside from the idea that there is no formal atheist churches (that I know of)?

Update:

I am aware that there is nothing in the constitution that calls for a separation of church and state. In fact if I really wanted I could try to push the idea that while the founding fathers did not want churches to be part of the government they wanted religion to play a huge role in the lives of those in government.

For proof of that idea all you need to do is to simply go to the following two websites.

http://www.senate.gov/reference/office/chaplain.ht...

http://chaplain.house.gov/chaplaincy/history.html

Then ask yourself if, as those pushing to get the separation of Church and State have the correct understanding of things then why would our founding fathers have made sure to have a preacher whose salary is paid by the Government, that has a job to be a spiritual advisor and counselor to our nations leaders?

This question is not about whether the idea of the separation of Church and State is legitimate or not, it is about a way to possibly end it.

Update 2:

Alright if my premise is nonsense and yours is not then show me proof that your premise is right.

If I flip the table around I can from the lives of literally billions maybe even trillions of people say that the idea of a supreme being of some sorts makes sense and that there has been ample personal evidence to support that idea. We are not talking about a come and go phenomenon here like what some of you are trying to dismiss this idea as, we are talking about something that has been around as long or almost as long as humanity itself has been around.

So to dismiss it as the rantings of a crazy lunatic is the sign of a closed mind.

There have been several people try to claim that Atheism is not a belief but a lack of belief.

I say that Atheism, in the case of many people, is a firmly held belief that there is no such thing as God.

I have seen, especially here on Yahoo Answers, Atheists actively preaching their beliefs and trying to win over converts from other faiths.

Zero is a number. The Null Set is still a set.

When Atheists have shown a video of them exploring this Universe and every other Universe in the Firmament showing and proving that God does not exist...

then until then their belief is irrational. This is so because they claim science as their own, yet science does not nor can it prove Atheism to be true.

Because no spaceship can be built that is so fast that it can return from going to every square inch of this Universe and every other Universe before those who sent the spaceship into space are dead and long gone.

Those who say that Atheism is proven by science say something that has never been nor ever will be so.

Only the Creator of all Creation can reveal Himself to those whom He created...

because He is so much more intelligent and powerful than...

    those who He created.

Atheism isn't a religion. There are no central tennants or doctrine. Even the details of the Big Bang and the Expansion of the Universe are disputable among groups of Atheism. There is no authority figure they worship. They don't create dogmas.

Calling it a religion is the modern believers attempt to discredit Atheist arguments: "They are too stupid to realize they're in a religion while they bash religion, so why should we take them serious?"

And you're right, there is no scientific evidence disproving God. But what you're doing is called "moving the goalposts." If you say you have an invisible God that exists in another dimension, there isn't any way to disprove it. Or prove it for that matter. But the Abrahamic God was given qualities that can be disproved with science, history, archeology, and even with the same scriptures that quantify it.

So no, we can't disprove A god, but we CAN disprove YOUR God.

In conjunction with your "moving the goalposts," you are trying to attribute any reference or definition of the word "God" with the "Christian God" without using as many words. That's called "thought stopping."

You are a propagandist and most likely a cultist.

There is no actual scientific proof that elf does not exist.

There is no actual scientific proof that gobbling goblin does not exist.

    Your premis is nonsense.

“Humanity was plodding along and then one day some smartarze suggested thunder was caused by an invisible man in the sky.

We've been asking for evidence ever since.

    You never provided any...

Cos if you did have some you wouldn't have to pull the "Have Faith" card.

YOU are the people insisting an imaginary little hairy-nosed psychopath is swooping about in the ether doing the worst possible mayhem on innocent children... NOT I?

If I told you I had a Pixie in my pocket I'm sure you'd ask to see it..

So what we are asking is... produce your Pixie ;)”

If someone tells me that the Easter Bunny is hiding in somebody's clothes closet somewhere in North America, there is no need for me to search every closet on the continent.

The person making the claim has to produce the rabbit or stop wasting my time.

Atheism isn't a religion. Atheism is the absence of religion. Science, however, is a religion. The only reason that science isn't a normal religion is because science is based off of facts and observation, while other religions are based off of faith and outdated holy books.

There is actual evidence to disprove god. The discovery of Higgs bosons for example. They disprove multiple aspects of god himself. The conservation of matter and energy disproves how god created everything. The Friedman model and the general theory of relativity greatly affected the existence of a deity. See, Religion was created at a time when we were scientifically ignorant. However, nowadays, science can explain everything without the need of a deity.

So in conclusion, no, atheism shouldn't be held to the same standards.

Um not all Christians are hateful nor are all identified Atheists. It isn't a religion it is a mindset, atheism. So how could it be separate? Besides, The words "separation of church and state" is not written in the U.S.A's Constitution. It is an implied idea from a series of clauses. It is not imposed but it is not entirely left to the states.

People misunderstand the separation if church and state. It is freedom of religion. Not freedom from religion. The purpose was to ensure that the state did not start forcing policies that might place peoples freedom of worship in jeopardy. We are free to express our worship any way we want as long as we do not trample the rights of others. The state has no right to interfere. When it comes to religion, the state can just hit the road.

Atheism is not more a faith than failing to suppose that the sector is flat is a faith. Your argument is ludicrous. I agree that many atheists brain different humans's trade approach an excessive amount of, however so far as passing legislation, the one ones I've visible are for the well of everybody. Let me let you know how preserving faith in colleges can paintings (and that is coming from an agnostic). Keep it as cultural schooling, and comprise everybody's traditions. We speak approximately Jesus in our university, however we do not pontificate approximately him as though he had been the messiah. We speak approximately Mohammed. We speak approximately Kwanzaa and Diwali as good. The motive for separation of Church and State is not to step at the rights of the few for the advantage of the numerous, and vice versa. No one must be pressured to stick to anybody else's ideals. Taking faith out of the general public does no longer avoid you from working towards it.

Well, there is not actually a law that enforces separation of church and state. In the first Amendment, it is implied that the church should not have government control, but it never says anything about keeping religion out of public.

  • There is also no scientific proof that Bigfoot doesn't exist, your point?

If atheism is a religion, then theism is a religion.

    It's not a belief, it's a lack of belief.

Atheism isn't a religion in any sense of the word. Atheism means an absence of religious belief, belief in god or gods etc.
