You get points for answering questions as a reward. It encourages people to be active on the forums and to keep coming back.
You can move up through the levels, and with each level you get to ask more questions every day.

The more questions you answer the more points you get. Also if your answer is picked as the best answer you get more points. So in essence the person with the most points out of all the other answers usually is the person you can trust the most, but still make sure you do your own research from what they tell you.
