Isn't the 2nd amendment suppose to help protect us from an unjust government?

    Our forefathers created the 2nd amendment so it's people can maintain and protect their freedoms from threats foreign or DOMESTIC.

    No, of course not. It was never meant for people to form private armies because they don't like the government. No sane statesman would have ever agree to such.

    It has been expanded in meaning to cover individual rights and protection (although not against the government), but it is not an absolute right. Weapons defined as dangerous or unusual can still be controlled by Congress or the States.

    Yes, it was, since back at the time it was written a musket that took a minute to reload was the most powerful type of weapon. But now that there's biological weapons, tanks, missiles, and rocket launchers, I doubt a little handgun will do much against an unjust government.

    Close. The purpose is that we Americans could own guns so we could preserve our freedoms.

    That may be from an unjust gov't, or it could be from a foreign invader or some other scenario.
