Why do my cats stare into space all the time?

Ok, I have 11 cats (They live outside, and I take very good care of them.). I bring one inside at a time to play with them, and it will suddenly stare into space at a random time. Except it seems to be following something invisible. Lol, it's head moves around slowly, as if it's following something invisible. When it does this, it stops purring, it's eyes widen, it brings it's claws out, it tenses up, and it runs out of the room. Then it's fine. All of my cats do this randomly, no matter which room we're in, though it seems to happen more often when we're in my room, or the computer room. What is this? I'm pretty sure it's not a spirit lol. Thanks for reading this and answering!

Update:

Maybe I like cats, and I can take care of them.

They can see and hear very small objects that we can't.

They are freaking cats, that's why they do it. My question is why do you have 11 of them?
