Why are there no more huge guitarists like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix?

when you think of amazing guitar players, the first the come to mind are all from decades ago. hendrix, page, van halen, slash, and list goes on and on. there were so many amazing guitar players back then but i cant really think of any huge musicians known for their guitar talents that have come out of modern music, im sure there are some, but there arent really that many "guitar heroes" anymore..why is that?

Update:

I KNOW there are many amazingly talented guitarists in music today, im wondering why the image of this kind of godly guitar playing rocker isnt really prevalent in society anymore

It's not prevalent in society anymore, because rock music isn't the most popular genre anymore. Mainstream music is pop/dance/rap now. Just yesterday I heard someone mention Flo Rida as a "rockstar." 0.o I couldn't believe my ears. There are some really great rock/metal bands out today revolutionizing music as we speak, but it has become a more underground art.

First off, you are just plain wrong. Second, there are huge guitars God's today but here is the difference. Back in the 70's those types of players and that type of music was on the radio so no one had to make any effort to find it. These days most radio stations aren't playing that type of music so you have to actually go look for it. Some of us will do so and others like yourself will just ask why there is no more great guitar music and then continue to listen to One Direction on the radio.

There are amazing guitarists out there, they might just not seem like it now. Jimi Hendrix wasn't considered one of the best until after a looooonnnnnnnggggg time. But also, nowadays people don't learn how to put soul and style into their music. It's all about being the "fastest". I think John Mayer is an excellent guitarist. Jason Mraz, Dallas Green from City & Colour, even Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold, etc. Just gotta look for them, they're there. And hey, we still have Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai etc.

    Source(s): I'm a guitarist:)

There are still alot of great guitarists but the special thing about Hendrix, Page and so on was that they invented a new way of playing the instrument and were pioneers in their genres. Some great modern guitarist that i think as "guitar heroes" are:

    Steve Vai

    Joe Satriani

    Yngwie Malmsteen

    Heres some Huge guitarists:

    Kirk Hammett

    Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P)

    Chris Broderick

    Marty Friedman

    Yngwie Malmsteen

    Michael Angelo Baito

The image of the guitar is gone because rap dominates over rock in popularity.

There might be some "huge" guitarists nowadays but nobody will ever equal Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page ! I DO have an open mind for music and am continually adding new (as in NON-classical rock) material to my iPod but have not as yet found anyone or group half as good as JH or JP !!! i.e just discovered Government Mule's "Thorazine Shuffle" but it's a one-song group. There wasn't any other song of the same quality in all their albums. Jimi is recognized as ABSOLUTELY UNEQUALED and unexplainably the world's best guitarist by sources in and outside the rock community.

Wow a great question for as quickly as..o.k. nicely considering this question is on the breaking point of impossible i'm gonna say website, by and massive in step together with his facemelters and the nicely-cherished "Stairway To Heaven" riff. to no longer take something removed from Hendrix however, they are the two impressive of their very own procedures.

It's just that rock isn't exactly very mainstream anymore so of course modern guitar players arn't gonna have the same praise as the ones from decades before. Look up Tom Morello. That dude is an unknown legend.

ok that you mentioned page, hendrix and eddie

but i dont really think slash is one of the greatest (as u've mentioned)

    now coming to your answer.

the music today is pop, techno and rap dominated ...i guess it would've been better to have born in the 40s and dead before 2000s...

true ,its been a long while since i've heard any good modern guitarist with a riff that could make me like,"hell yeah!!that's what i want"

    SAD THOUGH...

It may seem like there isn't a lot of amazing guitar players because it's not original. Most guitarist seem to follow their role models footsteps. I think a good example would be John frusciante following hendrix's sound (:
