Fire how to make CO and CO2?

Say you are burning something.

How are carbon monixde and carbon dioxide made?

    The fuel contains molecules with carbon in them.

    During combustion, the oxygen in the air combines with the fuel. The bonds rearrange to release the carbon from the fuel molecule and CO is produced. If sufficient oxygen and heat are available, the CO will further oxidize to CO2.

    If your fuel had no carbon in it, the CO/CO2 would not be produced. For instance a pure hydrogen (H2) fire would have no carbon products.
