Crohn’s disease is a long-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system.
The exact cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown. Research suggests that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may be responsible.
Although there is currently no clinical evidence, some people find that certain foods, such as dairy products, fatty foods and spicy foods, can worsen their symptoms. Eliminating these from their diet may help.
Medication can improve the symptoms (but may produce other side effects) and in many cases surgery can also help.
There are some other treatments that seem to have good evidence for their effectiveness these are immunotherapies, the most common is oral bacteriotherapy using strains of Lactobacillus casei - probiotic yogurt drinks.
Another is Faecal Bacteriotherapy This involves taking a stool sample from a donor (usually a family member) making a suspension with saline solution and delivering it into the patients colon by enema.
Another immunotherapy is helminthic therapy. This uses parasitic intestinal worms to reduce the inflammation of the intestine.
