The metal red flag is basically used to tell you when you have mail in your mailbox. Typically when the mail man comes around and does his route and gets to your house if you have mail in your mailbox when he places it in, he would lift the red flag up indicating "hey you got mail" and if it is down that indicates "no mail in your mailbox today"

people say its used to keep away aliens from your house but really it's used by drug lords to notify customers that their order is in the mailbox.
