Does this show how much of a whiny crybaby Don Fehr is?
So let me get this straight. The NHL made a proposal almost a week ago, and magically after the NHLPA "does the right thing" and doesn't file the disclaimer, Fehr tells the players that the NHL proposed loopholes in HRR and is "hiding" money?
Seems to me like Fehr just wanted to gain good face and not decertify, then come out with some reason almost a WEEK after the last offer and say that the PA is mad because the NHL took back some of the HRR. So you mean to tell me it took them 5 days to find that? Or you just wanted to look like the good guy, then file the disclaimer
Thoughts on round 492 of this stupid, senseless battle? And Fehr's little tactic?
vip - Multiple problems here. We aren't talking thousands, were talking guys who make millions. And taking a paycut, welcome to the real world. They took a "paycut" in the last lockout but still the average salary now is over $1million higher than it was then. In what other profession is your salary guaranteed to go up, let alone double? And holding the money? Give me a break. Escrow was at 8% per million last season, so I'm sure the players were well compensated. It's the only liability the players share with the NHL, despite being part of their league. Once again back to the real world, if a company is in trouble the first ones to feel it are its employees and that is CERTAINLY not the way it is in the NHL. The PA saw that when the NHL proposed it and waited until now to bring it up so they could have "reason" to file a disclaimer.

I love it when we only hear what we want to hear.
@vip. The wording re HRR was agreed to and discussed in meetings between the NHLPA and NHL. When the entire group saw it in writing they complained. Bettman said no big deal we'll change it to what you want. Fehr wanting approval to quit (again) said to the membership. "See what bastards they are. Tried to fool us." "Give me the approval to quit so I can threaten them again."
Let's go for a history lesson. Before the last lockout the players cut of revenue was 76% and the league was losing money. If the league as we know it was to survive a salary cap was necessary. The only sport without one has more money than God so it doesn't need to control spending. To go from 76% to 57% there had to be a reduction of 33% in salaries. The NHLPA offered 24% the league said thank you that's a start. but we need the cap. Here's what we'll do we'll give you guaranteed contracts (anybody else have them?). full free agency at seven years, arbitration at 5 years, plus many non monetary benefits. During this last seven years the silent people in this whole battle the agents came up with the back diving contracts and absurdly long deals. They convinced the stupid GM's that this would help their teams and that since only seven of the GM's were in place since the last lockout. They'd be gone when the excrement hit the oscillator. So the troubles had to happen.
If the players de-certify, they are cutting their own throats. At the present time there are 30 teams employing 25 players. Dust settles there will be 20-24 teams employing 16 full time players and a taxi squad of 8 players at $500K (or less). The top players will make their 15-18 million. The second line players will be earning 3-5 million and the drudges making less than a million. Simple math. all those third liners will be fighting over chump change and the stars will be flying first class. Why should Nashville pay Fisher $4MM when they could pick anyone of a dozen of similar players who would play for a million. The rich will get richer and the weak will die.

Bettman confirmed that the NHL side pulled a bait and switch with contract language....he said "guess the NHLPA missed it" the first time. So they send a 300+ page contract out and fill it with the typical legal language and the union goes in bargaining in good faith (or we assume they do) making progress along the way only to find the NHL tried to "trick" them (Bettmans implication). I fail to see where Fehr is doing anything wrong or different tan the normal bargaining back and forth....Bettman does it and it is okay? These guys have to live with a deal for probably minimum 8 years and that is longer than the average career so guys could be out huge amounts of money. Imagine for a minute your boss comes to you and says he has to cut your pay. He took 24% of your earnings once and now offers to take away even more. Problem is the typical fan doesnt understand the "business" of the business world and how what appears to be one way is really something entirely different. You think the players are only giving up 7% this time right? Wrong! Had the original offer fm the owners been the agreed to one they lose another 5% so the loss is 12% because the HRR would have been calculated differently. Only now the owners (Bettman) decided to slip in more changes to HRR driving down actual pay further (guesses now seem to be in the 18% range). And the owners want uncapped escrow so they keep 25% (the rumored potential number) of each paycheck with no certainty the players get that money back.
So lets say you made $50,000.00 last year. Now you take an 18% paycut leaving you with $41,000.00. But we arent done yet....the boss needs to hold 25% of your pay so now you are making $30,250.00 with no guarantee of recovering any of that additional $10,750.00 the boss withheld. Now pay taxes on that money. You have certain expense advantages over that player because you dont pay an agent, lawyer or probably a taxman too nor do you pay taxes where you are employed plus 29 other cities where you are obligated to pay the working tax in that city. But nevermind that....would you be perfectly agreeable to going from $50,000.00 to possibly $30,250.00 because the boss says so? Fehr is doing due diligence for the players to insure the best possible outcome for them.....he gets NOTHING out of this. HAd he simply caved early on and told the players "hey sorry guys but this is the best the owners will do" he gets payed his $3mill. salary the players agreed to contract him for....he still only gets that $3mill. for all the extra work of wading through this situation. He is a contracted employee no different than players are so he gains nothing by battling this out....but is obligated to do his absolute best by the players. Same as Bettman is doing for the owners...reality is he gets paid the same too no matter if there is labor peace or the current situation....his job is to do his best by the owners. This will not get done and the posturing wont end until the absolute deadline is here.....didnt anyone pay attention to the "fiscal cliff negotiations"? Nothing gets done until the absolute deadline and this is no different. The logic here says a deal must be done....the players obviously have a lot to lose if they dont play and given the comments by the NBC boss (the guy who is currently incredibly unhappy with the owners as he was told "just minor tweaks" for this CBA) the owners have plenty to lose as well. If they dont agree obviously the players de-certify and the courts could very well end the cap era and declare every single player (including kids in the minors...any player who has rights owned by any NHL club...not just the NHL guys) free agents. Think the poor teams claim trouble now....wait until players get with the wealthy owners who arent in favor of the Bettman plan right now (Rangers, Wings, Leafs) and suddenly you have dynasty teams being built very quickly by the money teams with the rest getting the scraps.

This entire lockout has shown us the true colors of both the NHL AND the NHLPA. Make no mistake, both sides are to blame for not only the lockout happening, but for it lasting this long. To place blame on only Fehr / the players or Bettman / the owners is absurd.

At this point it's stupid. Like they should be happy with getting a contract worth millions of dollars. Like it's pathetic. Sure the owners make a ton of money, but they're the owners. Why should they have to give up their money when they're already paying the players. I quit on the NHL.
