    It could be to exhaust the hot (burnt) gasses high enough to meet the local laws. Or it could be an earthing device to discharge electric charge from the thunder.

    Could be the funnel they pour the gas crystals through. If you see a grey uniformed stern looking tall white nordic man, run.
