what is the best martial art school for me?

I'm 14 and medium height but have short legs. I really want a practical martial art that will benefit my fitness but also work well in a real life scenario for say a school fight or a fight say in a parking lot where no one is around so I could'nt scream or anything and would have to fight my way out. Here are the schools

There is no best martial art or martial art school, it all depends on the student and the master. The master has to teach you right and you have to decide on the martial art that fits you the best.

Go and look at both schools and see which you like best. As so many of us have said before, it isn't about the art; the teacher is more important. The best martial art in the world is no good to you if the only dojo near you is taught by an idiot.

Find the instructor you can trust to teach you at your pace and keep you safe whilst you're learning. Also take a look at the senior students - are they the kind of people and kind of martial artists you want to be? Look up 'McDojo' on wiki to see what kind of thing you need to look for and things to avoid.

Just be aware that dojo training will prepare you for playground or pub fights, but there is no preparation for three people stepping up behind you with a knife and/or baseball bat. I wish I could claim this as my own wisdom but the quote is older than I am, 'the best defence is not being there'.

    Good luck with your training.

The most important thing about martial arts is the teachers.

Another important thing is the distance of transition from head of the school style to students (i.e. how many teachers you are away from the original master).

The wing chun club seems to have a direct link to ip man which seems very good.

The aikido club link has an "8th dan" on the page. The highest official ranked instructor on the UK is Kanetsuka Sensei, who directly trained with the creator of aikido and is 7th dan.

Even though aikido is my preferred martial art, I would say go for the wing chun club in this case. Or find a different aikido teacher. I trained with Shihan Ken Marsden in Leeds (6th Dan, trained directly under Kanetsuka and Chiba Sensei). I believe he now has a club in York.

Source(s): Practiced aikido in Leeds for 5 years.
