Most people have some TMD problem in their lifetime. Bit like a sore back or stiff neck - it happens.
There are lots of treatments out there, mostly no better than a placebo, but more expensive,
The only time TMD needs treating is if it interferes with living - if you can't eat, or if it's painful. In that case, start with non-invasive therapy, like physiotherapy. If you see a dentist be sure to take along as much information as possible - when it happens, what stirs it up, what helps, etc.
Be careful! There is a bit of a tendency to actively treat these things, when modern science says time is the best healer - and the cheapest!

Most likely the dentist will have an appliance made for you that will correct your TMJ problem. I seriously doubt that surgery will be required. Many TMJ problems occur due to patients grinding their teeth during sleep or some almost continuously even while awake. An appliance that is worn during sleep normally corrects the problem.

Its sounds like you could benefit from going to see a biofeedback therapist. It is an alternative that work for you.
