In NYC, how can I find out if someone died in 2012?

For a non-celebrity, you want to check the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) which notes the deaths of basically every American, as compiled by the Social Security Administration.

Google around and you'll find several websites offering you free (if limited) access to the SSDI.
