Yes, you can swap between TV types.

Just use the appropriate cable for the TV, either composite/component or HDMI.

Then, when you turn on the PS3, press and HOLD the power button for about 5 - 6 seconds (I think you get an extra beep).

That tells it to look at what type of TV is connected and it will give you a menu to set up the video format - it does not affect anything else on the machine.

Yes it is possible you will need a converter first though, your PS3 comes with one in the box, so have a look at it, it's normally an AV converter (has a red, yellow and possibly white cable).
