What relevance does one's position on Israel have for Secretary of Defense?

The role of Secretary of Defense is to lead the armed forces. I don't see how one's position on Israel is particularly relevant.

I can see it perhaps for Secretary of State, but I'm curious why it matters for defense.

Israel is a hotspot that could well come under attack. It is both wise and logical that his views on Israel and defending them in the event of attack are known as part of the confirmation process. This is because the Secretary of Defense heads up the war effort.

    Rape, massacre, transfer

Q: Benny Morris, in the month ahead the new version of your book on the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem is due to be published. Who will be less pleased with the book - the Israelis or the Palestinians?

Morris: The revised book is a double-edged sword. It is based on many documents that were not available to me when I wrote the original book, most of them from the Israel Defense Forces Archives. What the new material shows is that there were far more Israeli acts of massacre than I had previously thought. To my surprise, there were also many cases of rape. In the months of April-May 1948, units of the Haganah [the pre-state defense force that was the precursor of the IDF] were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them and destroy the villages themselves.

At the same time, it turns out that there was a series of orders issued by the Arab Higher Committee and by the Palestinian intermediate levels to remove children, women and the elderly from the villages. So that on the one hand, the book reinforces the accusation against the Zionist side, but on the other hand it also proves that many of those who left the villages did so with the encouragement of the Palestinian leadership itself.

It does have something to do with Israel, Turkey and the US have reconnaissance measures to help Israel if it needs it. McConnell and other republicans have said they have serious questions regarding his attitude towards Israel. At present Chuck Hagel follows what the attitude of the Pentagon and Joint Chiefs which is to not encourage a proxy war between Israel and Iran. There are those that want whatever Israel wants instead !

You feeble minded yanks have to understand that you are run by our Jewish lobby and so every persons in a position of power has to be pro Israel or else we might take serious action against you. For example we might start making you give us more than the three billion you already give us. You have to understand that through the power of our Jewish lobby we can make you say and think anything we please, because we own all your media. If you were a more advanced race we might have difficulty controlling you but as you are so gullible and open to suggestion, making you do our bidding is simple. In a few months we will bomb Iran and then you hapless half wits will come rushing to our aid and we will have you doing all the fighting and indeed standing the full cost of the conflict. It would be better if the average yank gave up trying to think and simply obeyed our commands like the well trained dogs they are.

Israel is a "landsupercarrier" in the Middle East for U.S. weapons and policy. There are too many pro Israel coo-coos trying to make foreign policy in America. (By coo coos I mean the people who think Israel needs to get blown up so Jesus can come back) or need to promote war to make money.

What about Hagel's cruel words to James "spam" Hormel, one of the richest men in America? The Ambassador said that he has never received a personal apology and Barney Frank said that what Hagel did is unnatural.
