Question about USB port(s)?

I have a windows laptop model 1440 my regular mouse didn't work so I used my desktop mouse for a few months it worked fine then I noticed the USB port on the right broke I tried the other two USB ports which was on the left side. I got a 4 port USB hub and the mouse still didn't respond. I'm getting a new mouse tomorrow. But why did the mouse not work on the left side and only the right?

I assume they broke with age. It happens especially if it is a cheap laptop or has been thrown around a lot.

Different contacts or different currents. Some ports get more power on down the line. Even a tiny voltage can change if it sees it or not, that close to the borderline. Different mouses can be fussy too. The left and right side ports are also different components obviously.
