my dog keeps rupturing mole on his head?

He's had a mole on top of his head for a couple of years (he's 12 now) and the vet has had a look at it and says it's just an age related skin ailment. Fred has always rubbed his head along furniture since he was young, like his head is itchy, but now that he's got this mole, he's rubbing it and making it bleed (for the last week). Is the most common thing to remove it surgically? Is there anything I can try at home that would protect the spot while it heals naturally?

Our old Cocker Spaniel had terrible skin legions all around his body. My mom used to wrap them up with gauze and sport tape to keep them clean and safe before and after surgically removing them.

Something good to try depending on the size might be to go out and grab a doughnut shaped blister bandage from the first aid isle. If this fits around the mole, you can then wrap it with breathable gauze and tape it up on him. The doughnut shape is specifically for blisters and other irritated spots because it raises the area around them making it harder to rub up against something or bang. If the mole is higher than the bandage, just stack them on top of each other. Here's a picture of what to look for.

I'd have your vet check it again. Changes in skin conditions, especially bumps and lumps, can mean it's time to remove. Your vet is the best source of advice as she knows the history of this bump. A $35 consult would be well worth the money to me...

Put a mole band aid on it, or paint it with the fake skin stuff.

You can cone him too, but he's too old to be humiliated like that.lol
