Borderlands? Or Borderlands 2?
I really want to buy Borderlands 2 on Steam, but it's about $60. I don't buy a video game if it's over $50 dollars, so I am thinking about getting Borderlands 1. I've heard the two games are extremely different. So should I buy Borderlands? Or is it better to wait until Borderlands 2 gets cheap?

They are essentially the same game - a FPS with RPG elements, set on a futuristic planet with a slight wild-west flavor and a not-too-subtle sense of humor. In both games you will kill critters, and take their guns which are hopefully more powerful than the ones you have, and so on and so on.
Borderlands 1 was a very fun game and while it's not necessarily required that you have played the first game before playing the 2nd, you really don't have any reason NOT to play it - especially if you can get it and its DLC addons for cheap.
As for Borderlands 2, wait for the GOTY edition so you can get all of its addons at once.

I wouldn't say the games are that different gameplay wise, but I would hold off on getting BL2 because it's been on sale on Steam a few times already and will likely be again.

borderlands 1 is trash compared to borderlands 2, dont waste your money on the 1st one

Get the first one, they actually kind of tie together a little bit, so you'll understand more in the second one if you buy the first one.
