Horse pins his ears back and stamps. What to do?
I have a friend whose kids own a horse. When I aproach the horse in their field with a lead rope, the horse pins his ears back and stamps. I've ridden him on "good days" bareback but most of the time, he is threatening. He was green broke before they bought him. The family offers no advice. I'm no expert with working with nasty horses but this one seems like a fun start. Any advice?

In addition to the above answer which I agree with, I suggest making things more fun for the horse. Try giving the horse several treats after he lets you put the lead rope on. Every now and then, go out to him and put the lead rope on him and pet him awhile, then take the rope back off again without asking him to do anything. This horse is 'sour', and it's going to take a little mental reconditioning.

Horses are very smart and some will purposely intimidate people if they think they can. The best thing to do is call their bluff. Walk up fearlessly and put the lead rope on. Body language is everything. Please be careful. I don't know this horse or your abilities. I only know that some horses will be fine with some people and completely intimidate others (because they can).
