Motherboard Power 24 pin question?

I have a 750 watt Corsair PSU. I seem to get problems with freezing and resetting on my PC when I plug in the extra 4 pins on the 20+4 pin motherboard connector, but not when I leave only 20 pins plugged in. However, I have read that this is not ideal, and it will eventually overheat or damage the 20 pin connector. If it makes any difference, my graphics card is powered by 2-6 pin pci express connectors coming from the PSU. Please advise if I should plug in the 20+4 all the time and look into a new power supply, or provide material stating that it is ok to leave only the 20 pin plugged in in cases of having independent pci express power.

thanks in advance.

Update:

i did read the article you provided. what additional information do you need to know? the motherboard is the msib75 p45. the graphics card is a gtx 460 1gb by gigabyte.

    I have just built a intel DH77EB

The PSU was a PC Power and Cooling 600-watt..

    I used the 24-pin connector..and then I needed to plug a 4-PIN into a 4-PIN connection/

    ...useing the LEFT-4-PIN...because it was a double--Pig-Tail..(Left 4-pin)(Right 4-pin)

You hold your Pig-Tail showing the connection SNAP-holder/(match the snap)

    Use the Left/4-PIN..

I'll take a picture and return with that../

present day PSUs incorporate a 24 pin connector the place the final 4 pins could be left floating in case you have a motherboard with a 20 pin PSU connector. regrettably, it would not artwork any incorrect way around. A 24 pin motherboard connector won't artwork with a 20 pin PSU
