What is the object distance given Distance between object and image and magnification?

The distance between an object and the imahe formed by convex lems is 100cm. Given that the magnification is 4 what is the object distance ?

    Answer: The image distance is 20cm for a real image (and 33.3cm for a virtual image)

    Method:

    For a real image (the question should have spercified this!):

    The magnification is the ratio between the image and object distances:

    Di/Do = m

    Di/Do = 4

    Do = 4Di

    The distance between the object and its image is obtained by adding

    Do + Di = 4Di + Di = 5Di i.e., the sum of the distances must be 5x the image distance

    5Di = 100 cm

    Di = 20 cm i.e., the image distance is 20cm

    If this were a virtual image, the image and object would be on the SAME side of the lens and so the distance between them would be the DIFFERENCE between Do and Di, so 100cm would be 3Di, and Di would be 33.3cm.
