Most diseases don't cross the species barrier. This means that if, for instance, you have the flu, your dog cannot get that flu from you. Or if your pet is sick, you won't be able to catch most illnesses from your pet.

So you wouldn't be likely to catch something from a sick lizard, BUT, with reptiles and amphibians, always wash your hands after handling them. They can carry the bacteria salmonella, which can and will make you very sick.

This is the same for wild or pet animals.

I also wouldn't recommend catching a wild animal and keeping it as a pet. You need to do a great deal of research before deciding to get a pet, then you want to find a tame animal, that is less likely to hurt you or your dog. Please research any specific animal you are interested in. This is especially important with reptiles and amphibians, as they can often have very long lives and are very different. Please make sure they are right for you..

I don't know what country you're in, but in Australia it is illegal to catch and keep native animals without the appropriate licence.

That's all I have to add to Holly's answer :-)
