Why do retailers force their employees to stand all day?

I never understood, why for instance, a cashier can't have a stool to sit on. Would it really chase the customers away if employees weren't forced to stand all day or if, heaven forbid, a chair was spotted behind a counter?

Because a clerk who is sitting down looks more unapproachable than one who is standing.

I've worked in department stores. You get to sit down at lunch time and you get to sit down during breaks. It never bothered me.

Others have nailed this however i might add probably if customers have been to set a pricing they might no longer exceed for gadgets, perhaps that might work. For illustration take a 42 inch HDTV, if outlets are averaging $850.00 then buyers would demand a $500.00 rate, or no sale. The time limit could be perpetual. I consider retailer panic would insue before the 10 day interval would expire for your query. Clearly no predicament will ever exist that may force scale back pricing as long as the general public falls for entrepreneurs ploys. Men and women just don't have any allegiance to so much of some thing anymore even when in mutual contract.

Because they'll have to stand all day to get Section 8 Housing & Food Stamps on their days off. LOL

Police and Fire officers have no obligation to perform and sit , enjoy their donuts and the internet but We have an obligation to pay their Union Wages. Go figure? Many public officials still spout they'd make more money in the private sector, LOL Jerry Brown sez the Budget is balanced, LOL

Source(s): They can quit any time and the Affordable health Care Act will charge US for their meds , flu shots and sex change operations. Ain't that sweet.

The standing will not be for more than 4 hour at a stretch. It is part of the job and there is no intention of the employer to make the employee to stand.

Having worked as a cashier in various environments I always found standing less tiring than continually jumping up and down.

If you are standing on a soft surface, with good shoes/shoe inserts, you're better off standing than sitting. Donald Rumsfeld's desk was a (or is a) standing desk. I'd love a Rumfeld desk.

Employers don't FORCE anyone to do anything. It's an even exchange, to use a retail expression, a paycheck in exchange for work.

    It's a free country.
