Can somebody convert these GPS readings to decimal form for me?
I have 2 readings. #1 39(degrees) 40' 10.9" #2 78(degrees) 39' 21.4" Any help would be appreciated. We have to convert it and mail the form back in for a well we drilled. They won't accept the degrees, (and what I assume to be) minutes, and seconds. They need decimal form. Thanks a lot!

Degrees (°) are 1/360 parts of a circle, arcminutes (') are 1/60 parts of a degree and arcseconds ('') are 1/60 parts of an arcminute.
39° 40' 10.9''
= 39° + 40' à (1°/60') + 10.9'' à (1°/3600'')
= 39.66969°
78° 39' 21.4"
= 78° + 39' à (1°/60') + 21.4'' à (1°/3600'')
= 78.65594°
Don't forget the latitude (N/S) and longitude (E/W)!
Assuming you are in the USA (near Cumberland, MD), that would be:
39.66969° N, 78.65594° W

I'll do one
39º 40' 10.9"
60 seconds per minute, so we divide the sec. by 60 to get
39º 40.1817'
60 min per degree, so we divide the min. by 60 to get
39.6696944º
