Do you think bipolar man will change his mind when depressed state ends?

I recently started dating someone who is bipolar, and I had only seen him in the manic state, until now. He started talking about how he is a failure and not ready for a relationship because he is so messed up. My question is, how long do you think the depressed state will last? Then, do you think he is going to change his mind and think he is ready? If anyone has experience, that would be helpful... thank you! :)

How long a depressive episode lasts depends on the individual, and whether they are working with their psychiatrist to try and do anything about it. The longest I had one last was about 4 months, but I wasn't taking my medication at the time. There's no way to know if he will decide he actually is ready for a relationship once the depressive episode lifts. If his bipolar is untreated and he's not taking medication, or if his medication isn't working, then he may recognize that his severe mood swings will affect his relationships, and so decide he doesn't want to put a girlfriend through that. One thing you need is know about people with bipolar disorder is that it can be very difficult to be in a relationship with them. If their bipolar isn't controlled you will be riding the same roller coaster they are, and it will be very trying for you emotionally to deal with it.

He may well change his mind on matters while within a depressed state. Bipolar states can last for, as I'm guessing you've read, weeks to months (this can change with age), and none of the thought processes are really cut in stone.

I may not be doing an adequate job of answering your question, but whatever he may be expressing during a depressed state is as 'real' (and genuine) as if he were currently manic. It's not as though he will switch back to mania and all will be forgotten.

It can take a while, no ones bipolarness and depression is the same. My most recent low lasted 2 months and I ended up regretting alot of the things I thought when I was going through it so he may as well.

The most important thing right now is for him to be on meds. During episodes, whether it be manic or depressive, it's hard to really know what someone's true feeling is. I was in a relationship, and when I was manic, I had an incredible sex drive and wanted to be with him 24/7. When i was depressed, I would think that I'm not good enough for him. Once I got back on track, with medication, I figured out my true feelings for him. If he is on medication, then maybe he should talk to a therapist. The first step in figuring out where your relationship might lead you, is making sure that he is back on track.

Depressed state may last for weeks, months or even years. You can't really tell if he will change his mind.
