my apple wireless keyboard keeps turning off?

So, I just got this wireless apple keyboard from apple, I use it with my ipad. And recently its been starting to turn off and on randomly. Is this a defect? Do I need new batteries?

Please help :(

    It sounds as though the keyboard may need new batteries.

    well when that happens manually turn off your iPad or computer and turn off the keyboard and turn it back on. it used to happen with me with my wireless apple mouse
