When did words like "gay" and "homo become so popular as derogatory words?

Why do people that dont like something say that it is "gay" and why is saying things like "thats gay" so common in our society? Im not homosexual, but I see no reason to use their lifestyle like a curse word.

    I say it. But i don't mean for it to offend anybody. Basically they're saying "That's retarded or, "That's stupid" But do not say it in front of a gay person cause it could easily offend them. If you just met a person I would recommend not using it until you know more about them...

    Hey, every single demographic is searching for something to get offended by. Some are legit, most aren't. We call stuff "gay" because in our mental construct we define gay as undesireable. It's not nearly as complicated as you may think. The population determines something is undesireable, the people react with an expression.

    I'm gay and I ******* hate the word "lesbian". I still call things that are stupid "gay" all the time. It doesn't matter when it happened.
