How to become better at German?

I've been learning some German through sites like duolingo and busuu. These have been helpful although I know I need to immerse myself in German to become better. German classes are hard for me to attend as it requires a 1 and a half hour journey each way for me to get to them. I also live in a country with a very low German speaking population and I'm in high school so I can't afford to study in Germany itself. Would changing the language settings on my device to German, watching German tv shows/films, reading German books help? All tips are extremely appreciated.

You could also try making friends with German speaking people and chat through Skype. You could also watch German broadcasts through Deutsche Welle. They have great language learning programs suited to your level of learning and ability.

find someone who speaks german and is willing to help you. either in your city or on the internet. you can probably find on couchsurfing language groups that can help you with that.
