With the decline of phone boxes, will post boxes go the same way?

Royal Mail deliveries have declined significantly in recent years since there peak in 2005-06 when some 84 million items were delivered every working day. Today that figure stands at roughly 58 million.

With privatisation looming - possibly even this year - will we see a loss or closure of post boxes? Or, is there hope yet?

I have to say, my area seems a little too well-served, with six post boxes all within a short walking distance.

I don't see that happening for a while yet.

Not everyone has a computer or knows how to use email.

Maybe in about a decade post boxes will be phased out.

Not completely. There may come a time when there are less post boxes, but there are some things that cannot be done via the internet! we often need to actually send off things, and if something is requiring you to send an original copy of something, then this can only be done by post.

This may not be so 100 years from now, but certainly in our lifetime there is need for some!

As we all know the IT and Electronic Mail has had a large impact. Paper generate mail will be with us for some time. What we will and have seen the privatization of deliveries continue to rise. Because the postal service is an icon of the U.S. it will continue, not without adaption in place.

With email coming in popular in the "instant age", post boxes and "snail mail" is becoming more obsolete. With exception of sending packages that email doesnt send, clothing, personal items, etc. or maybe bill preferable to certain audiences, it probably will be going down hill.

    Not for a long time.

Most people have phones at home or mobiles.....but not all written correspondence can be done by email. I have to send a claim form to British Airways and as they require receipts it must be posted,

You will probably see fewer boxes. The postal service will not provide more than they have to. For financial reasons they will pare back their services to be fiscally responsible.
