Had an accident. How should I handle insurance?

I had a minor bump up today and hit the vehicle in front of me in traffic. Very minimal damage to his car, a little more to mine. It cracked my bumper and is going to be about 200 to fix. Didn't get a ticket and we agreed I would just pay for his damage out of pocket. If I filed a claim with my insurance would it have an effect my premium or go against me any way? Thanks!

It might not make your insurance go up, depending on your state and the total amount paid out.

There's NO WAY I'd recommend you paying this out of pocket. If two days from now he decides he needs to go to the hospital because his back is sore, you void your coverage if you pay for the damage to the car. This could easily end up costing you $10,000 in uninsured damage.

File the claim. Let your insurance handle it. Only EVER pay out of pocket, for claims where NO ONE IS IN THE CAR.

Your deductible is probably $200 or more, so, even if you do file a claim, your insurance probably won't pay anything for the damage to your car. You will have to pay the $200 (or your deductible, whichever is less) yourself. All the insurance will pay (if your deductible is more than the damage to your car) is the "very minimal" damage to the other car.

And your premium would probably go up a lot more than just $200. So it would be cheaper not to use insurance.
