Why is it called a U turn if it looks like a lower case 'n'?

    Because of the stem.

    It used to be called an n turn, but in the early 1960's the NAACP objected that it sounded like a racial epithet, so they had to change it.

    So that's why I keep getting pulled over. I keep telling the officer, "But the sign says. No! YOU turn."
