Wow not sure what is going on here, but all the answers here are REALLY bad. The people here are giving you really bad information, and recommendations. Sony, Bose, pre-packaged systems, really people ?
Wow well, first be careful who you take your suggestions from and get a sense they KNOW what they are talking about lol. I feel sorry for customers trying to put a nice little system together and don't know where or who to go to. Even the chain stores don't have a clue how to design or install a system properly.
My guess is your on a really tight budget, so normally I would recommend people go and discover your local independent high end audio video store as they carry the better brands of speakers and equipment, and have years of experience designing higher quality systems. But even the budget systems they can design are probably more than what your wanting to spend. If you have some leeway in budget then absolutely that is what I would suggest.
Otherwise find someone that can help you design and install the system who truly knows the better brands of equipment and can step you through the process of setting it up and calibrating it as well.
yes you want to buy and assemble a system from components from manufactures that all they do is make speakers, and equipment manufactures that only make receivers, integrated amplifiers, cd, dvd, and blu ray players etc. Especially in the budget range you don't want to buy speakers and equipment from the same manufacture.
For instance you could buy speakers from manufactures like Paradigm, Energy who only make speakers and do a pretty good job of making budget speakers. Then buy a receiver or better yet integrated amplifier from someone like Marantz, Denon, or better yet NAD. as they build some decent quality amplifiers and source equipment and then you can have a system that will actually sound good, be reliable, and be proud to own.
Do not get caught up in numbers and power ratings this means pretty much NOTHING. The key is quality of speakers and amplifiers, parts and build quality. You have to know what your looking at when it comes to specifications and they ultimately will not tell you if something is good sounding, its only a tool to help you properly match speakers and amplifiers so you don't run out of power.

A good HT system will not include a disc player.
You need to start with a surround receiver, a proper one with A/V inputs outputs, including digital audio in, and banana jacks for the passive speakers. The subwoofer will be active.
You will choose your speakers separate from the receiver.

You need a home theatre system in full package then its obvioulsy wont be the best.
You need to choose speakers, amplifiers and disc drives separately. so make ur choices based on your room size where installation is easy. if u have a small 12 by 12 room to fix this and put a 100W RMS speakers, ur experience will be painful.
i suggest go with Philips or sony disc drives for CD/DVD, then yamaha home theatre for rest. Either u can go with yamaha speakers or may be u can chose separately.

Branded product is good if you don't have the time to scout for the best individual parts ..
Go with Sony or Bose { Bose is pretty expensive}
If you happen to buy things individually , I would recommend buying all the stuff except the player itself .. Connect it to an HTPC instead .. { A computer that will be able to give much better quality than any player will give .. }
If you wanna build an HTPC ,

This Onkyo 5.1 home theater speaker and audio receiver package is a really good deal:
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5-1-Channel-T...
And this Sony Blu-Ray disc player with WiFi and a USB port will go nicely with the sound system:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Internet-Streaming-Defi...
It will cost you close to $400 in total, but this setup will sound way better than any Home Theater in a Box system (HTiB). It seems like they're really degrading in sound quality and the amount of bass they're capable of reproducing. The last decent Home Theater in a Box I've heard was my old JVC TH-M45 system I bought in 2004. It sounded great, had heavy bass for its size and while it lacked several audio inputs like audio receivers have, it still sounded way better than the Home Theater in a Box systems I see nowadays.

It depends on your budget.
If you want economical system go for philips (ranges from 2500 to 11000) and if you can afford around 20000, go for bose or sony!
For me philips system worth 4000 is working fine.

Sell the crap you have, dont need it. I put my couch facing window, and put large pictures and mirrors on the walls of my home to get lost and dream in. My only vice is food and this stupid internet box I often go to, no electronics, stereos, tV, no junk and clutter, just simplicity and minimalism.
