Rug Carpet Stair Treads on Carpeted stairs.?

Rug Carpet Stair Treads on Carpeted stairs.?

Hi - I have some rug carpet stair treads (one per tread) that I want to hold in place on carpeted stairs. I like this idea because I can remove and wash them. Is there a carpet tape I can use that will not leave a residue on the carpeted stairs themselves? Or is there some mechanical means I can use to attach/clip them to each tread that still leaves them easily removable and will not damage the stairs.

Putting treads on carpeted steps is not a good idea, because unless you nail or staple them on, they are definitely a tripping hazard. You could buy a carpet runner to go down the stairs and use stair rods to hold it in place.
