Bastien or Alfred piano books?

I'm teaching piano lessons and I'm not sure what book series to use. I learned when I was very young and used the Bastien series for beginners, but my student is 13 so I wanted to get her a more adult-oriented series. However, I know next to nothing about these and would like some recommendations. Any piano teachers out there (or piano students) who could tell me their opinions of the Bastien or Alfred adult series?

As a well experienced teacher, I am quite acquainted with not only these two method series, but many more as well. In my opinion, it is important to not base lessons on one series, but to judge the knowledge of the student and match it to what the books have to offer. Many teachers opt out of series books completely and even despise them.

For this particular student and without knowing more, I'd advise going with the Bastien series. Alfred is based a little more to the younger student and has cute juvenile pictures throughout the book. I don't believe your early teenager is ready for the adult series although I often use those as I see applicable.

Be sure to be well rounded in your selection by including theory, technique, and plenty of repertoire to endorse the lesson plan. There are various books available in the series to interest your student's style of music. Good luck!

Thanks for these to go on. My daughter just started and we've gone back to some older books I had and I'm wondering if they still make--It's great becaue the music is beautiful -- Oh she's 6. That's too advanced I think Music for Millions by Consolidated music Publishers-- compiled by Denes Agay. Anyway, make sure she ENJOYS it and don't push practice too hard, otherwise they will not play later when they can read it more easily. My dauther is 11. Good luck! Bastien is how she started when she was 8 years old.

I am both an online piano teacher and an offline piano teacher. After teaching extensively both ways, I can honestly tell you that I see many more advantages with learning online. Learn here https://tr.im/PianoForAll

Keep in mind that, while surprising, those words only hold true with an online program that has every component it needs to provide you with the potential benefits.
