Why is it that so many conservatives claim to be patriots and accuse liberals of hating America?
To me, this is very, very stupid. We're talking about the same people who think the country was founded on the principles of Christianity, right? The same people who say that majority should rule when it comes to social issues when the founding fathers, through the Federalist Papers, made it VERY clear that they did not want an oppressive majority to rule over the minority tyrannically? Do they also not realize that the economic power struggle of what are today considered liberal and conservative economic views has existed since the founding of this country? Have they ever even opened a history book? I fail to understand how it can be claimed that liberals are not patriotic in light of these historical facts. There are people who are patriotic on both sides.
Change is for da Bums, I've never burned an American flag, but I'm personally not patriotic for many reasons, mostly due to my own belief system. I don't intend to burn an American flag, but people do have that right; it's called freedom of expression. It's in a little thing called the First Amendment.
The Socialist Guy, you are correct. There's a lot of hatred and division in this country. Sad, really.
Alice, thank you. It doesn't do well to commit a straw man fallacy, does it? To be fair, though, the internet is a free forum, and sometimes these statements have to be made in order to make a point. For example, not all conservatives think that they exclusively are patriots, of course, but I do make a valid point when I say that a lot of them seem to.
Const. King, very true!
CheaperThanDirt, I am not really partially right. I'm totally right. It just so happened that when the colonies were founded most of the people who came here came to escape religious tyranny. Many of them just so happened to be denominations of Christianity; that doesn't make it a "Christian nation." Majority does not and never has ruled in this country; the Framers themselves sought to express this belief in the Constitution and the Federalist Papers.
The conservatives then had a title. So did the loyalist liberals. The United States of America started when the Constitution was signed into law, and the law plainly states that religion won't be a part of government, hence the Establishment Clause. Also, it confuses me when you say that everyone in the past wanted less oppressive government; look at the first political parties: the Federalists and the Republicans. Modern parties as well, ok WHAT are you talking about? The Democrats want less control at the

See the guy who thinks liberals are all flag-burners. My own husband is an Army war veteran. You may feel free to draw conclusions as to how accurate some of those conservative assumptions are.

You're partially right, Cheese. This country was founded upon Christian values, upon conservative ideas. Governor Caswell of Carolina, called the loyalists Liberals. You see, by the time of the Revolution, America was already a different country than the British. The Conservatives were trying to preserve the country that had developed: America. The founders were against any type of oppressive government. That's why they did not want a king, nor a family to control religion. It's big of you to say that there are patriots on both sides, but that can not be. Can it? One side wants to reduce oppressive government & the other side wants to increase it until few have any choices. What choice do kids have in school lunch. A small mater, but training begins with the young.
The French called America The Grand Experiment. No one expected America to last beyond a generation or two. We are getting very close to Tyranny now, Cheese. Rule by divine Executive Fiat.
