What legal issues arise when using collegiate logos?

A family member and I are planning on starting a small internet business selling a particular kind of decoration. We thought it would be nice to personalize said decoration with colleges in mind. Do you have to have some sort of permission to do this? For instance, could we make a Harvard (just an example, lol) decoration to sell, without permission. If we would need permission, is there a reasonable way to get it?

Update:

Okay, can you use only the colors and a non-official logo? That is to say, for Harvard could you use crimson and white or black, whatever the colors are, and perhaps a crimson H on the item? Is it only an issue of using the actual logo?

You can not use collegiate or any other logo without permission.

Doing so can create a BIG lawsuit for you - easily $500,000

Is your idea of "reasonable" is paying the $100,000 license = yes, there is a "reasonable" way to get the licenses.

    - but the licenses are not free.

You can contact the college or universities' licensing department. Most large schools will require you to pay a $200 application fee and then another $250 or so per year to be licensed with them, then they require you to have $1,000,000 in liability insurance which will cost you around $1000 a year. You will then be required to pay them 10% of whatever you sell your item for. Not very convenient for the small business. I think most universities will give you a list of business who are already licensed to sell through them and then you can piggyback off of them to sell your merchandise, obviously that business would take a portion of your profits as well though.
