My account has been overdrawn. Will the bank work with me?

Alright, a so-called "friend" of my boyfriend wrote him a check to pay back a loan. His friend received a settlement so we knew he had the money. However, the bank called today and told us that the Federal Reserve was unable to locate the account of the check that was written. This has caused us to have a substantial amount overdrawn from our account. (There is some stupidity on our part so please no nasty, negative comments). I do not want to close the account. Will the bank be able to work out a payment plan with us?

No the bank will not work with you. They are in business to make money. Fees and more fees is what the bank love. Have you ever heard of a joke that goes like this

If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

Because banks stick it to the customers with all their fees!

No the bank will not work with you. The money owed is building interest the longer you take to pay it off. The bank is not going to agree to a payment plan. Your account will be suspended. You will not be able to cash checks. Any deposits made will go toward the debt owed. You cannot close the account without paying the amount you owe. You cannot open an account at another bank until the debt is paid off. You are naive if you imagine the bank is going to work out a payment plan for you. You should consider this a painful learning experience.

You owe that money immediately and don't forget, you tried to deposit a check from an account that doesn't exist. Be prepared for a visit from a government agency on this one, especially if that check was supposed to be drawn against the US Treasury.

I hope you have the cash, because that would be a whole other issue.
