please help! i got a phone call today. He said he was trying to collect a debt. He had all my info including?

all my info including my ssn . I confirmed it. I told him to call my husband. He did. He wanted my husbands bank account number. My husband asked for the paperwork. He said they don't do that. They just take it each month from his account. My husband said no way and the guy hung up on him. Now I realize it's a scam. I'm worried because I confirmed my info. Is there anything I can do to protect myself if he tries to use my info to get money some other way? I'm downright panicstricken! help !!! .

Since you confirmed your SSN you need to follow all the steps on the FTC identity theft site to protect yourself, starting with putting a fraud alert with the credit bureaus http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/cons...

Never speak to these people on the phone and never give out or confirm any information. If anyone calls about a debt tell them "I do not acknowledge this debt. You are to cease and desist all calls to this number and all communication may only take place in writing. Per the Fair Debt Collections Act I am requesting written proof of the debt be sent to my home address"

The "collection" is a scam. Legal actions are served by mail or in person, never over a phone. Report the phonecall and stop the harassment: http://womeninbusiness.about.com/od/debtcollection...

U can tell the bank authorities to block ur account for some time so that the person cannot get access to ur money.. N u should probably report it to the police maybe they can trace the call
