why won't my router work?

i used to have a wireless internet system in my house before hurricane Isaac came and destroyed everything. i purchased a new laptop, modem and router so i could do wireless again. the router is a netgear g54-wgr614. i followed the instructions on the dvd that came along with it, made the proper connections, and when i tried to configure it nothing worked. what am i doing wrong? i have a laptop in the other room that i'm trying to send the wireless signal to. am i using the wrong router? before i plugged the router into a pc as the main computer but it got destroyed. now i'm using a laptop as the main computer to plug the router into. is that a problem in itself? can anyone give me any advice on this? i sure hope so because i am stumped!!!!!!!

Netgear is a good router, sounds like something just gone a bit wrong. I never use the DVD to setup a new router because they often cause more problems than they solve.

Pull up the information on setting up the Netgear router MANUALLY. It should be a pdf on the disk that came with the router. If you can, print out the instructions.

When it comes to setting up your wireless (SSID) choose WPA, not WEP (very crackable).

Make sure you write down your WPA key for when you are setting up your laptop to log onto the router.

Connect your laptop to the router with a Network cable

Now setup your router as per instructions and your ISPs settings (You may have to contact your ISP to complete the setup).

Once done and saved (Make sure you SAVE the setup)

Disconnect the wired connection and setup your laptop to connect tothe router
