My dog mothers my guinea pigs?
I have a female dog who is not desexed, and I brought home two guinea pigs two weeks ago. Now she stands outside their cage watching them literally all the time. Her breathing is fast and I'm afraid that she'll hyperventilate or faint if she doesn't stop. She won't eat, she won't do anything but watch them. I think it might have something to do with her maternal instinct, as she is very protective and doesn't let any of our cats near the guinea pig cage. She isn't herself anymore and I just want to get my old dog back. How can I stop this?

Have her spayed, and put the Guinea Pigs elsewhere.
She could be thinking they are puppies, but be very stressed out at their odd unpuppy-like smell and behavior. It isn't a good combination. Don't forget also that dogs are predators, and Guinea Pigs are prey. She may come to the realization they're not magical puppies, and eat them. It would be a logical conclusion.

this is very odd. what is the breed of dog? Some dogs have high prey drives and that could be the case. She see's them as prey and wants to chase them. However it could be something else im not sure. However if you think it is her insticts you could get her fixed and see if that changes anything.

I have a border collie that did the same thing! Every once in a while she will do it like when they are out side.. After a while she got over it and now she leaves them alone
