Question about Cadaver Dogs?

Are they trained to find the scent of a recently decomposed body or can they hint if a body once died at a certain location even if it was years ago?

My apologies in advance if this is under the wrong category. Yahoo's suggestions are very limited.

Update:

Linda, I personally don't have a dog, and in reference, I don't mean it for people who have dogs as pets. Cadaver dogs are specially trained and work with police/forensics teams. You're silly.

To everyone else, thank you. All info was extremely helpful!

They are detecting the scent of human decomp, not necessarily a piece of dead human. If someone died but did not decompose in a location, they will be unable to detect that, but they will be able to detect traces of decomposition if, say, a body was moved after a few months of decomposing in a location. That doesn't necessarily help a detective or archeologist when they dig and find nothing there (dogs' noses are more sensitive than any scientific equipment we've been able to create so there is no was to verify the dog was right without finding something substantial).

Some dogs are even able to detect such small amounts that a 600-year-old bone 6 feet under will be alerted - http://www.news.com.au/national/this-dog-has-a-nos...

both they pick up the sent of the dead and will lead you to it if the body has been moved via human of animal the dog will let you know and take you to it if it cant it is trained to tell you the direction the sent leads and try and follow.

what a strange question, why would you want your dog to trace a decomposed body
