Which PS3 model is the best for backwards compatibility and reliability?

I'm looking to purchase a Playstation 3. I need to know which models can run Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 games.

80GB I'm sure. Depends what your willing to spend. I personally have a 80GB PS3 and i am having a great time with it, There are less crashes than a 60GB version, and it is a multi-region system - meaning if you live in the states you can play British games, and vice versa - The obvious difference is the HDD space, the extra 20GB does come in handy, and unlike the Xbox 360 you can put almost any regular hard drive into a ps3, so space is no problem. There is normally a good warranty, and it hardly ever crashes - when it does it freezes once a year maybe less - So yes i totally recommend a 80GB over a 60GB, but it is your choice. With Dan W's comment, the 80GB does all of this as well, and more.

All PS3s can run PS1 games. The only models available now are the "super slim" with either the 250GB or 320GB hard drive. Other than the space of the hard drive all PS3s are identical.

None of the current PS3 models can run PS2 games. This feature was removed from the PS3 back in 2008. Only the original 20GB, 60GB, and the first 80GB models could play PS2 games but they aren't available anymore. You can occasionally find one used...but I wouldn't trust a used PS3. Too unreliable.

to clear up the confusion that a lot of people seem to have when it comes to backwards compatibility, you're going to get my long answer.

just because a PS3 is fat does NOT mean it can play PS2 games. there is a fat 40GB and 80GB and neither of them play PS2 games. the only models that can play PS2 game discs are as follows:

    20GB - CECHBxx

    60GB - CECHAxx, CECHCxx

    80GB - CECHExx

all of the other systems can NOT play PS2 game discs. they can, however, play PS2 games downloaded through the PlayStation store.

backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows on NTSC-U/C systems:

20GB (4 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) - YES

60GB (4 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) - YES

80GB with 4 USB slots (fat, no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) - YES

40GB (2 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) - NO

80GB with 2 USB slots (fat, no longer in production) - NO

160GB (2 USB slots, fat, no longer in production) - NO

    120GB/slim (2 USB slots) - NO

    250GB/slim (2 USB slots) - NO

any other up coming PS3's - NO

in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.

also, you CANNOT mod a PS3 to play PS2 game discs. it is impossible.

as stated on the PlayStation website: "If a PlayStation 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications."

the software found on the PSN is for backwards compatible PS3s ONLY, and will NOT make a non-BC PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 games.

    ALL PS3s play PS1 games.

they say that the fat PS3s aren't as reliable as the slims, but I honestly don't know about that. I have a slim and it works perfectly.
