Typically a chef would start as Pot Wash then taking interest in Starters and Desserts and get themselves on the ladder that way. NVQ Level 1 would be good enough to get yourself a job within a normal pub as a chef. Skipping the duties of washing up. Level 2 would get you into fine dinning.
I started as a potwash in a pub, taking interest in starters and desserts. They then took me on as a kitchen assistant. I changed jobs a year later to a better place as a Commis Chef. I then moved to Hilton Hotel as a Commis Chef. Now i work in a Rosette restaurant. (Time and experience will get you into the restaurant you provided) NVQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery will speed up the process
Hope this helps.
