BARRIO ALTO has cobbled streets and fantastic nightlife, and the areas around ESTRELA and LAPA are Lisbon's main design district and diplomatic quarter. Look out for the huge basilica.

Lisbon also has some happening, more recently-developed areas such as ALCANTARA west of the centre on the waterfront, where decaying docks have been transformed into a thriving commercial area. BELEM was the site of the 1940 Expo World Fair, and is a cultural quarter with all sorts of interesting attractions and monuments; AJUDA just a little bit to the north has the city's largest park.

Back in the centre, the AVENIDA LIBERDADE is the Champs Elysees of the city, it's main tree-lined thoroughfare, leading up to the topiaried PARQUE EDUARDO VII with it's great panoramas of the centre, and down to the river. Nearby is the museum owned by Armenian art magnate CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN and the finest source of artefacts in the city. You can also visit Iberia's largest shopping centre at the CENTRO COLOMBO, and the home of mighty Benfica football club the ESTADIO DA LUZ.

Along the eastern axis of the river is the modern PARQUE DE NACOES, venue for the 1998 Expo World Fair, and a great place to spend the afternoon with its sculptures and eye-catching architecture. You can also go on daytrips to the UNESCO heritage site at SINTRA, or along the coast to CASCAIS and ESTORIL. Be sure to look out for some of the authenticities of the city, such as the street performers in the Baixa, old men grilling sardines in the back streets around the castle, the historical trams rattling through the streets, melancholy fado music, drinking 'cafe bica' to blow your head off, admiring the blue AZULEJOS (mosaics) found on the streets, and eating 'pasteis de nata' or spicy custard tarts in a Pombaline coffee shop.
