Traveling during winter conditions?

My family and I Will be arriving in Chicago this Saturday for a 1 week vacation. Due to current weather conditions, we're afraid to spend so much time in the hotel. Changing travel dates is not an option... we would appreciate any ideas to adjust our plans under these circumstances.

There are alot of great things to do in the city (Chicago) even during the winter months.

Many of the Chicago attractions are indoor places.

The museums are fabulous: The Field Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Science and Industry, The Shedd Aquarium, The Planetarium.

The Sears Tower (now called Willis by some) is a fabulous stop if you have never been there. It is amazing to be in a building so incredibly high. There isn't alot to do at the top; you just kind of walk around and see the city from so high, but it's worth it to do it at least once. They also have these new glass boxes that you can walk out on if you are brave enough! Also really neat to see.

Navy Pier is also really awesome and primarily indoors. You can walk inside where there is little shops and stores and food, or outdoors on the pier. Either way is nice. Great views of the city from there.

There is outdoor ice skating near Millenium Park which is fun. Also, great views of the city from there and they play music and have a place to buy hot chocolate and what not.

Overall, Chicago is one of the most fantastic cities in the country. The architecture is amazing. There are tons of stores and shops, not all overly expensive, but of course, some are.

There is plenty to do in and out doors and I think you and your family will have a fabulous time no matter what!

Oh, and if you get a chance and want to get some REAL Chicago pizza, go to Pizzeria UNO near Ohio St. It is the home of the deep dish pizza and one of the best pizza places in the country. Yum!

Just look up "things to do" in Chicago. It's not going to be absurdly cold this weekend and part of next week, but the wind coming off the lake and through the buildings in the Loop will be pretty bad. Dress in layers, including hats and scarves.

Michigan Avenue/Miracle Mile, Navy Pier, Chicago Cultural Center, Art Institute, Field Museum, and Museum of Science and Industry just to name a few of the bigger attractions. I like Chicago for the neighborhoods though: Lakeview, Greektown, Oak Park, and Wrigleyville are all well worth walking around. Depends on the weather that day though, of course.

Those dates are in the coldest part of Winter but the forecast shows all temps above freezing with chances of snow only for the following Sun and Mon. Not to worry about closures af attractions unless temps fall below -20F:

Chgo is THE BIG CITY so it knows how to operate in all seasons. Don't rent a car if you're arriving by bus, train or plane. If you're driving, leave the vehicle in the hotel's lot. Driving here is a pain and parking at attraction parking lots is expensive. Take the CTA buses and trains to all attractions. Ask your hotel concierge for routes and tips. He probably uses it to get to work.

The concierge can also help in getting tickets for museums, attractions and theater. Take the family to see Peter Pan (Cathy Rigby). The Bulls play against the Spurs on 2/11. Take in a basketball game:

Hockey fans? The Blackhawks play in the same United Center on 2/12 and 2/15:

Dress for cold weather in layers. Bring boots, gloves, hats and maybe a scarf. Many attractions have coat check rooms for clothing and back packs.

The following site shows 35 things to do for your vacation starting with the largest auto show on Earth. It even mentions 2 of the 3 unique ice rinks with affordable or free skating...you can rent the skates:
